Apply for funding

Full Proposals for the Whatua Tū Aka pathway now open!

Expressions of interest for the 2024 Open Pathway closed on 1 May, 2024. Please see the key dates below for more information.

The TLRI has two pathways for educational research funding: an Open pathway and Whatua Tū Aka, a kaupapa Māori pathway.

Links to the 2024 EOI guidance for Open and Whatua Tū Aka pathways are provided at the bottom of this page.

This year, the TLRI fund is prioritising funding for the following proposals:

  • Research on topics of strategic importance within the early childhood education (ECE), primary and/or secondary  school sectors.
  • Research that focuses on success for Māori learners as Māori in any sector.
  • Research that focuses on success for Pacific learners as Pacific in any sector.

If your proposal focuses on Pacific learners, you may elect to have your proposal assessed against a specific set of Pacific criteria (see the Pacific template for the Open Pathway below).

Please note that while Open Pathway applications must submit an Expression of Interest, Whatua Tū Aka proposals can submit at the Full Proposal phase.

Project Categories

Can we discuss navigation by Categories at our next meeting. Only 5 projects have been put into sub-categories (Maths and Assessment) above. It would be useful to have feedback as to whether it’s worth creating and assigning sub-categories for all the projects
